The dreaded first post
What's all this then?
A place for me to write. About what? About tabletop games, the ones I'm running and the solo games I'm playing. What else? Who the hell knows - short fiction maybe? opinions? word vomit that makes no sense? (definitely). I struggle to break through the motivation wall and write for myself, this is an attempt to trick me into writing for "other people" (if that's even your real name). The following is a brief explanation of what's likely to appear in the near future.
What's a Songbird?
Aside from being a Fleetwood Mac song and, well, a bird. Songbirds 3e is a Tabletop Role-Playing Game by game designer snow and - frankly - I fucking love it, a whole lot. It's a game where players take the role of a person risen from the dead and charged with the duty of laying restless spirits back to sleep. It's light on rules and incredibly heavy on interpreting the writing and gigantic sci-fantasy eldritch vibes. It's my favourite game and I've been running a play-by-post of it over the last month or so over in the FIST Discord (Yes. FISTcord.)
We have a map, some player characters and a city to start with. Exact details of the world and it's rules are being collaboratively created between the players and myself. This is my preferred way to approach ttrpg's - I'm not interested in laying out a historical timeline of events which impact the world in ways that make "sense". I'd rather my players and I come up with whatever we think sounds cool at the time and collectively say "Great, that's part of the game now.".
Songbirds posts will be about that as it happens.
Going Solo?
Tabletop games have the incredible capacity to be pretty much anything, including games you can play all by your lonesome. I've been looking for an excuse to dive in to my folder of solo ttrpg's and I think this will be a prime opportunity. Solo games can take different forms but many rely on the player making frequent "journal entries" in order to document the events as they unfold. They can also become quite mechanically robust and "crunchy" - much to explore. Posts tagged solo will be all about these playthroughs.
A writer, are ya?
I could be, you don't know! Sometimes I get so enamoured by a character I'm playing in a game that I feel the need to write a little short piece of fiction about them. Maybe I'll do some of these for our Songbirds world, or for some of the characters I'm playing in games other people are running. fiction tags lead to these, if you have the stomach for amateurish fiction.
That's it
That's all I got right now. Check back in a bit, I guess? Now get outta here. Scram!
